Joshua Nichols of New Jersey and Joshua Nichols of Maryland Comparison

Click here, Joshua and Joshua, to see a downloadable file of an analysis developed by the Joshua Nichols Family Research Group comparing the lives of two separate men, Joshua Nichols of New Jersey and Joshua Nichols of Maryland. Researchers through the years have confused these separate individuals and Nichols Family Trees now posted at numerous websites on the Internet reflect the errors derived from this misidentification. Research now proves these were entirely different men and it is hoped this analysis can set these records straight so that descendants of each Joshua Nichols can explore more fully a true and accurate history of their family.

Joshua Nichols (b. abt 1710 -1793) of New Jersey and later North Carolina was first married to Agnes (Last Name Yet Unknown) who died in 1749 and is buried in the Lamington Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Bedminster, New Jersey. In 1751 this Joshua Nichols married Janet Fraizer Hankins, widow of Richard Hankins, in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The nine confirmed children of Joshua Nichols with both wives are: Agness Nichols who married John Park, Jacob Nichols who married Agnes Lock, Elisabeth Nichols, Anne Nichols who married John Lowrance, Mary Nichols who married Edward Callahan, Joshua Nichols, Jr. who married Jane Brown Cowden, Jane Nichols who married Andrew Kilpatrick, Joseph Nichols who married Elizabeth Conger, and Daniel Nichols who married Mary Alexander.

Joshua Nichols/Nicholson (b. 1726 - d Unk) of Maryland was the son of James and Phillis Hardy Nichols/Nicholson. His life is traced from 1726 until he is referenced in the Last Will & Testament of his father, James, in 1748. Afterward, no further record can be found of this Joshua Nichols/Nicholson by the Joshua Nichols Family Research Group. A Joshua Nicholson next appears in a 1783 Maryland Tax Record and again in 1803-1804- and 1809 Stepney Parish Episcopal Church Records from Somerset County, Maryland. Whether this is the same Joshua as was born in 1726 remains unknown.

Previous Nichols family research reflects Joshua of Maryland's grandparents as Thomas and Mercy Reynolds Nichols of Rhode Island. Current research by Mike Hitch and the Joshua Nichols Family Research Group asserts the correct parents of James Nichols/Nicholson as Richard and Isabella Nicholson. YDNA test analysis also proves there is no connection between the descendants of Thomas Nichols of Rhode Island with descendants of Joshua Nichols of New Jersey within the past 3000 years. There were no descendants of Joshua Nichols/Nicholson of Maryland found to have taken the YDNA test for comparison. Neither was it determined if Joshua Nichols/Nicholson of Maryland was ever married or had children. The narrative shown at the above link will confirm why Joshua Nichols/Nicholson of Maryland is NOT the Joshua Nichols who married Janet Fraizer Hankins in New Jersey in 1751 nor is he the same Joshua Nichols who settled later in North Carolina and who died there in 1793.
